Jakarta, January 27, 2024 – President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, inaugurated the Jawa-1 Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLTGU), an integrated facility with a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) owned by Pertamina and strategic partners, along with dozens of other strategic electricity projects in West Java. During the event, President Prabowo set a target for energy independence within the next five years and expressed optimism that Indonesia will not only become self-reliant but also emerge as a key player in the global energy transformation.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that the Jawa-1 PLTGU, managed by PT Jawa Satu Power, a consortium company under Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) in partnership with Marubeni and Sojitz, is an energy downstream and transformation realization, aligning with the government’s Asta Cita vision under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration during his first 100 days and the directives of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE).
“Jawa-1 PLTGU, with a capacity of 1,760 MW, is the largest in Southeast Asia. It is equipped with advanced technology that adds operational, financial, and environmental aspect value to support energy resilience, particularly in the Java-Bali region,” Fadjar explained.
He elaborated that the PLTGU includes a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU), which serves as a storage and regasification facility for LNG.
The facility also employs single-shaft combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology, a cutting-edge system that enhances efficiency and reduces electricity production costs.
“This technology enables faster power ramp-up, which is crucial in stabilizing the electricity grid frequency in Cilamaya, Karawang. It ensures a reliable power supply even during fluctuations in the network,” Fadjar added.
He also emphasized its direct benefits to the community, particularly in reducing the potential for electricity losses during transmission to industrial and residential areas. Moreover, the plant’s strategic location in the Java-Bali power load center further enhances its significance.
Additionally, the facility features black start capability technology, enabling it to self-start. This significantly reduces synchronization waiting times during recovery from power outages.
Aligned with efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the electricity sector, the Jawa-1 PLTGU is projected to cut carbon emissions by 3.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent annually.
The Jawa-1 PLTGU is also a major milestone resulting from synergies between state-owned enterprises and international partners, demonstrating a strong commitment to collectively advancing clean energy transition efforts in Indonesia.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.**
