Abu Dhabi, January 17, 2024 – During the discussions at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 (15/1), John Anis, CEO of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), shared insights on large-scale renewable energy development acceleration in Indonesia. This initiative aims to support the global energy transition toward achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.
In a discussion with Jim Pagano, CEO of Terra-Gen Power Holding America, John Anis explained that Indonesia has renewable energy potential exceeding 3,500 GW, encompassing solar, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal energy.
"Pertamina NRE is committed to becoming the key driver of energy transition in Indonesia by developing bioethanol and geothermal energy. These are two strategic initiatives that not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels but also support national energy supply stability," he stated.
John emphasized Indonesia’s substantial renewable energy potential, particularly geothermal energy, as the country is located within the geologically advantageous "ring of fire." To realize this potential, Pertamina NRE requires government support through proactive policies such as renewable energy subsidies, fiscal incentives, and strategic collaborations with the private sector. "We are also working with international investors to ensure sustainable financing for green energy projects. This is a strategic step we are taking, as collaboration is crucial," he added.
Both leaders agreed that innovative financing is a key factor in accelerating large-scale renewable energy projects.
According to John, the private sector can spur increasing interest in green energy development through financing models such as green bonds and public-private partnerships.
He also highlighted the importance of an inclusive approach in developing renewable energy projects. "We are not only focused on energy production but also on empowering local communities. Project site optimization is designed to ensure that surrounding communities gain economic and social benefits, such as new employment opportunities and more equitable access to energy," he stated.
Despite these promising opportunities, challenges remain. John noted that infrastructure needs, such as energy transmission and supportive regulations, require further attention. Enhancing technology and grid reliability will also be a primary focus in the coming years.
With strong international collaboration, Indonesia and other countries around the world can demonstrate that transitioning to net zero through large-scale renewable energy is not just a dream but an achievable goal.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), added that Pertamina is undertaking various initiatives to support the Indonesian Government’s target of achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, including building and developing energy transition projects in Indonesia.
"Pertamina NRE’s participation in various global forums is a positive step toward promoting and establishing partnerships with international stakeholders in renewable energy development," Fadjar concluded.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
